Each presenting whole blood or platelet donor to ARUP Blood Services' donor centers in Salt Lake City and Sandy will receive a Megaplex movie ticket good for one of several Megaplex theaters along the wasatch front. This fun life-saving promotion starts Monday, December 19, 2011 and will last until Sunday, January 15, 2012.
The winter time is traditionally a very difficult time to collect blood because of vacation, holidays, and the loss of high school blood drives. So, to help maintain the blood supply for patients in need of blood, we are having some winter fun to let our donors help save lives and go see a movie.
ARUP Blood Services needs 100 donors a day to meet the needs of the hospitals we serve. We also need 20 platelet donors each day. ARUP is the sole blood provider to University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Primary Children's Medical Center and Shriners Hospital for Children. There are 48 hospitals in Utah but these four alone use around 25 percent of the blood in the state.
Please help us maintain the blood supply during these winter weeks and come in and donate blood at one of our donor centers in Salt Lake City or Sandy starting December 19, 2011.

With high schools out for the summer (which account for 30% of total blood donations) and multiple holidays in July it's difficult to maintain the blood supply for the hospitals. ARUP Blood Services needs 100 donors a day to meet the needs at Primary Children's Medical Center, University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children. There are 48 hospitals in Utah but ARUP Blood Services is the sole blood provider to these four hospitals which use around 25% of the blood in the state.

Starting May 10, 2011, 16-year-old Utahans will be allowed to donate blood if they have the written consent of their parents/guardians.
The law was changed in Utah during the 2011 legislative session. Prior to the passage of the Human Blood Procurement and Use Act (House Bill 64) in February, 18-year-olds and 17-year-olds with parental consent could donate blood, but 16-year-olds could not.
Accepting blood donations from 16-year-olds has proven to be an acceptable practice, and 41 states have now adopted 16 as the minimum donation age. Lowering the donation age in Utah will allow for an estimated 10 to 20 percent increase in blood donations among high school age donors.
16-year-old blood donors will need to bring a signed parental/guardian consent form when they donate blood. Find the form on our “Donor Qualifications” page. Donors will also need to meet the minimum weight and height requirements required for donors age 22 and under. Please check the chart on parental permission form to see if you meet the height and weight requirements to donate blood.
